The area (5,879 sq km/2,270 sq mi) on the W
bank of the river Jordan; population (1994)
866,000. The West Bank was taken by the
Jordanian army 1948 at the end of the
Arab-Israeli war that was caused by the
creation of Israel, and was captured by
Israel during the Six-Day War 5-10 June 1967.
The continuing Israeli occupation has created
tensions with the Arab population, especially
as a result of Jewish-Israeli settlements in
the area. In 1988 King Hussein announced that
Jordan was cutting `legal and administrative
ties' with the West Bank, leaving
responsibility for Arabs in the region to the
Palestine Liberation Organization (which was
already the de facto position.
